  • This is a meeting for AOD nurses by AOD nurses.
 
  • The format for the day will relate to a variety of topics suited for a number of nursing accolades.
 
  • This meeting is being held to provide nurses with an update of current trends within the Drug and Alcohol Sector.

Presenters

Dr David Ross:

  • Practicing GP for 30 yrs and he has had a D&A interest for over 25 yrs.
  • He is a founding fellow of the Chapter of Addiction Medicine.
  • Approx 10 yrs ago he helped to set up and still attends BoxHillHospital anti-natal D&A clinic.
  • He has been involved in Obstetrics all his medical life.
  • He will be presenting at VAMNEF a case related to Pharmacotherapy and Pregnancy.

 

Prof Jon Currie:

  • Professor Jon Currie is Director of Addiction Medicine, St Vincent’s Hospital and is recognized for his understanding of the neurobiology of addiction.
  • Prior to this he was Director, Drug and Alcohol Services Western Sydney Area Health Service. Professor Currie is Australia’s only neurologist working in the field of addiction medicine.
  • In 2009 Prof Currie chaired an NHMRC working committee to develop the new National Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol.
  • Prof Currie has over 30 yrs experience as a Medical Doctor.
  • He will be presenting at VAMNEF a case on Subcutaneous Flumazenil in the management of Benzodiazepine dependence.

 

Peter Athanasos:

  • Peter Athanasos is the author and coordinator of addiction and mental health programmes at the University of Adelaide.
  • His PhD concerned pain management in opioid maintained patients.
  • Peter’s area of greatest research interest is the effect of substance use on co‑existing disorders such as mental health, pain and other pathophysiology. 
  • Peter is a registered nurse.
  • He will be presenting at VAMNEF a study of the impact of natural disaster conditions on D&A clients and examining management solutions.
